Sofa legs are a small part that changes how a whole piece looks and how long it lasts. This guide covers the three decisions that matter: height, material and finish, with the standard options we manufacture at Sevad.
1. Height
Leg height sets the seat height and the look of the sofa. Our legs are made in 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 inch heights. As a starting point:
| Height | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 2 inch | Low beds, TV units, floor-style sofas |
| 3 inch | Standard sofas and lounge chairs where the frame already gives most of the seat height |
| 4 inch | The most common sofa leg. Gives clearance for a robot vacuum or mop |
| 6 inch | Cabinets, sideboards, raised seating, and sofas with slim frames |
| 8 inch | Tall storage and bar-height furniture |
If you are replacing legs on an existing sofa, measure the old leg from the mounting plate to the floor and match it, or the seat height will change.
2. Material: why stainless steel
Stainless steel (SS) legs resist corrosion in the base metal, not just in a surface coating. That makes them the right choice for humid regions, coastal cities, commercial furniture and anywhere floors are wet-mopped. Plated mild steel legs cost a little less but depend entirely on the plating to keep rust away, so they are best kept to dry indoor rooms. All of our stainless steel legs are sold in sets of four with plates and screws.
3. Finish
We offer matt, glossy, black, gold, rose gold, lining and silver-cut. Gold and rose gold are PVD coatings, which bond to the polished steel surface and hold colour well indoors. A few practical notes:
- Matt and black hide fingerprints and minor marks better than glossy.
- Match the leg finish to the handles and knobs in the same room where possible. We make all three in the same finish families.
- Clean plated finishes with a dry or lightly damp soft cloth. Avoid scouring pads and acidic cleaners.
4. Shape
Round legs (50, 65, 75 mm) are the safe default. Square legs (50×50, 60×60, 80×80 mm) suit boxy modern sofas. Cone and pencil legs give a mid-century look. Oval and Y-shaped legs are used as a design feature on premium pieces.
5. Fixing
Each leg comes with a mounting plate and screws. Fix the plate to solid timber or a plywood block inside the frame, not to thin board alone. For sofas over about 1.8 m, consider a fifth centre leg to stop the frame sagging.
Summary
Pick 4 inch stainless steel in matt or black if you want a safe, durable default. Go taller for cabinets, shorter for low seating, and choose gold or rose gold when the leg is meant to be seen. If you are unsure, send us a photo of the furniture on WhatsApp and we will suggest a code.
